The Inspiration – Stained Glass & Italian Architecture

Traveling through Italy, I was captivated by the intricate beauty of stained glass windows—deep sapphire blues, warm ambers, and rich garnet reds framed by stone. That interplay of light and structure became the heart of the Venezia Quilt. I wanted to design something that felt classic yet fresh, structured yet full of movement—a quilt that could elevate any space, just like a stunning architectural detail in an Italian villa.

The Venezia Quilt takes inspiration from traditional log cabin blocks, but with larger strips for a bold, modern feel. It’s a pattern that looks intricate but is surprisingly beginner-friendly, making it perfect for quilters who want a stunning finish without overly complicated piecing.

Fabric & Color Choices – Featuring the Rainier Collection

For the cover quilt, I used my Rainier fabric collection, which brings a warm and organic feel to the design. The deep navy and soft taupe tones create a sophisticated contrast, while the subtle prints add depth without overwhelming the overall pattern.

Tips for Sewing the Venezia Quilt

While the quilt looks intricate, it comes together beautifully with a few simple techniques. Here are my top tips:

1. Big Strips, Big Impact – Unlike traditional log cabin quilts with tiny pieces, Venezia uses large strips, making it faster to piece while still giving you that structured, graphic effect.

   

2. Fabric Placement Matters – Think about contrast when choosing your fabrics. If you want the stained glass effect to shine, make sure your colors have enough variation to define the shapes.

   

3. Pressing is Key – With large strips, keeping seams flat is important. Use steam pressing (hello, Laurastar!) to get those seams crisp for the cleanest finish.

   

4. Quilting Ideas – Straight-line quilting enhances the modern look, but if you want to lean into the classic stained glass feel, try an allover motif that mimics the flow of leaded glass.

5. Perfect for Any Skill Level – If you’re newer to quilting but want a design that looks high-end and polished, this is the pattern for you!
